Planting The Seeds To Move The World Forward: Louis Chenevert

When Louis Chenevert took the reins of United Technologies Corporation (UTC) in 2006 many of the former big names in the technology sector were disappearing. Industrial giants like RCA, Zenith and Philco collapsed under the strain of the “new economy.” Chenevert understood that there would be no business as usual. He would have to steer UTC through one of the worst recessions in history and he would have to reinvent how UTC conducted business.

Chenevert knew that the business needed a solid foundation. It wouldn’t be easy to change the mindset of those who had been doing business the same way for a lifetime. It would require a whole new set of procedures and a willingness to try something new to compete with the new global marketplace. The ultimate goal of the corporation needed to be to remain on the cutting edge of innovative building and aerospace technology without sacrificing the workforce.

It wasn’t enough for Chenevert to have the latest and greatest technologies available. He understood that the people behind the technologies were just as important as the technologies. Investments that included employee buy-in did better than other investments. The employees of UTC were a cherished commodity that worked exceedingly well with the proper motivation. Chenevert encouraged his employees to become lifelong learners and embrace the newer technologies.

In essence Chenevert planted the seeds to move the world forward. The motto of “moving the world forward” is the premise that UTC stands on today. UTC serves the commercial aerospace, defense and building industries providing businesses with the tools they need to succeed. UTC’s current CEO Gregory Hayes credits Chenevert for establishing the methods and procedures that are still being used today at UTC.

It was important to Chenevert that no corners be cut in providing customer service. He also didn’t want to sacrifice quality by shipping production overseas. Workers needed to know that their work mattered and that the company cared about their safety. The result of his seeds is that UTC is a very respected aerospace, defense and building industries operation expert in all aspects of operational efficiency and procedures.
